The nightsisters are a fascinating in-between that stands between the dark and light side of the Force. I was intrigued by the fact that they technically identified as neither Jedi nor Sith, yet they could use the Force all the same. Much of their morals seem to follow a similar trend: characters like Mother Talzin, Maul, and Ventress are more antagonistic, but characters like Merrin are only hostile as a way of defense. In this post, I wish to analyze the Nightsister's soundtrack, based on the musical soundtracks thus released in Star Wars The Clone Wars.
According to Daniel Wallace, author of Book of Sith: Secrets from the Dark Side, the Nightsisters are indeed comparable to the witches of Wiccan religion. Wicca is a Western modern-day pagan religious movement which espoused strong ties to nature and familial connections. Wiccans gain their powers from their worship of gods, which in turn represent their connection to the world around them.
The music associated with the Nightsisters in Star Wars is dark, ethereal, but not necessarily malignant in nature. Much of the music was characterized by lyrical verses and dark reverberations that imbued the music with a sense of mystery. The dark tones in the music represent the Nightsister's connection to the dark side of the force. On the other hand, the music isn't as harsh or violent as Vader's theme, which indicates that the dark force is not a controlling force. Similarly, Wiccan religions is not characterized by dogmatic adherence to a single god, but rather through experience.
